For-profit news isn't news; it's an advertisement.
I've been saying "ban 24-hour news stations" since the first time I heard O'Reilly and I knew that political talk shows were doing more harm than good the first time I heard Limbaugh.
I think I was 16 or 17 at the time though I'm not exactly sure about that. I could be off by a couple years.
I was hanging out with my dad, a rabid conservative, at his office and he had Fox News on the TV. He worked and I hung out and did what I could around the office for him. Later, we turned the TV off so we could listen to Rush's show. I listened closely all day, analyzing everything they, and my dad, said. I didn't hear news, or facts, or even legitimate opinions; I heard divisive rhetoric, manipulated talking points, and calculated repetition of opinion that was intended by the speakers to be interpreted as fact by the audience.
I was brought up in a conservative household with conservative views so I "should have" just accepted those things and agreed with what was being said but, on one single afternoon at my dad's office, I was turned off to political "jounalism" by the very people that were supposed inform me of things I needed to know about. I realized that they should have been using actual facts, sound reasoning, logic, and education instead of the radical opinions, misrepresentations, and rhetoric to disseminate information to the viewers who would then form their own opinions.
After I realized what the media was trying to do to me (indoctrinate more than educate), I looked elsewhere (to a mixture of non-profit media sources) for my political information and I used my intellect, my moral compass, and my set of beliefs to determine how I wanted to interpret and react to the information I was finding.
