Landed a job!
I am waiting for final confirmation, but the outlook is good. I went to a temp agency, informed them of my situation, and they said it was no big deal. What better employee could you find? A guy that is in jail will miss zero work, show up early, stay late, and take all the OT offered! Plus, hangovers are not an issue, either.
The position is in a plastic injection molding factory. 2nd shift, so I will be in the jail during the day until about 2:00, then out until about midnight. I will get to avoid evenings with the knuckle heads! Yippee!
Time is going by pretty quickly, but after I start working, it should fly by.
I have been working STS (sentenced-to-serve) for about a week. STS involves cleaning the local museum, cleaning the hockey rink after games and other busy work. My fines are all paid off, so I was doing it for free- just to get out of the jail. I was the only one on the crew that doesn’t smoke, and it has stayed that way! I am still smoke free!
Spending time here is not as bad as it seems. I spend my evening playing poker with the state guys. There is a program called ICWC- Inmate Community Work Crew- which consists of guys from prison. They have to serve half of their time in the joint without any write ups, go to treatment, and then they are eligible to come spend the rest of their time here, working for $1.50/ hour, building houses. Pretty cool program. So I hang out with them the most. They are the most respectful and they don’t mess around and cause trouble. We just play cards and have some pretty wacky conversations. Good times.
One of them was drunk, got into an accident and 2 people died as the result. That is some scary shit. He has been locked up since 2003. It just makes me so thankful that no one got hurt when I made that same decision.
It really brings things into perspective. Things can always be worse. And one must learn from their mistakes.
I’ll say it again. If you drink, don’t friggiin’ drive. PERIOD. All it takes is one bad decision and people can get killed.
Cheers to you all, and a special thanks to The Todd and Captain Carrot, you letters and cards were a really cool gesture and that card cracked me the hell up!
Thanks Army!
