Brew Pal vs. Brewing classic styles

Sun Apr 10, 2011 3:46 am

I have a question that most likely has a very simple answer. Why, when I put in a recipe from Brewing Classic Styles into Brew Pal, are the OG's are so far off. I have played with as many settings as I can find and there is no difference. The blond ale I am brewing has an OG (max) of 1.054 and beer pal says it is 1.066. This is not that bad a difference, but on the Cal Common recipe the gap is much wider (i can't remember the exact numbers). I am going to try to do them on paper once I finish reading Designing Great Beers, but I was wondering if anyone else has noticed this.
I realize in real life I will have a different number as well because every system is different. I am trying to work on my accuracy in hitting my numbers so any help would be appreciated.

What batch size are you using? I think the BCS recipes are all 6 gallon.

Not sure what you've tried but first thing that comes to mind may be batch size. BCS are 6 gallon recipes.

Are you putting in the extract, or all grain versions, because efficiency differences could mess you up a little bit too.

Good luck!

Yep.

Adjust your brew volumes to 6 gallons and 70% eff. to mimic recipes from BCS.

Oh I thought they were based on 5 gal.... But I reread the book and it says they are designed to "leave" 5 gallons in the fermentor.... I guess I had my helmet on to tight thanks for the help

Check out the section in the book titled, "How to Brew These Recipes" or something like that. I think it starts around page 40. It has all of the numbers and references which formulas were used for calculations such as hop utilization and color.
I hope my post helped in some way. If not, please feel free to contact me.
