Anybody had this problem.....

Tue Sep 16, 2008 8:11 pm

I had a vigArous fermentation of a APA that overflowed the airlock. I ferment in a fridge and had left for the weekend after brewing on Saturday morning. By the time I got back on Monday, I had a real moldy mess. I cleaned it up as best as possible but knew I didn't get it all. When it was time to keg I had a new batch of mold growing in the fridge and on the outside of the carboys.

I cleaned the outside of the carboy with PBW leaving the hood and airlock on. Then sprayed it down with StarSan. Even with my best attempts, there was still mold under the hood that I couldn't get out. After removing the airlock, I sprayed the top of the carboy down with StarSan and wiped it off any remaining mold with a cloth that had been sitting StarSan. I transferred the beer to the keg and hope for the best. The beer taste fine now, but I'm worried about the self life.

Anybody dealt with a similar situation? What did you do? Anything I should have done different?

Blow off tube instead of airlock. I stopped using airlocks all together for the first few days of fermentation.

Keep us posted on the beer. I'm sure it will turn out fine and it sounds like you had some good clean up procedures.

That might shorten his self life though according to the doctors!

Shelf life is over rated. :)

Yes, a blow off tube is the cards. How do you clean those damn things?

Soak em in hot oxy clean and ot water to get most of the crud off. Then an overnight soak in PBW and they come real clean.

My buddy puts foam control in his primary. I worry about it messing up head retention, but he swears by it and his beers don't have any problem with, near as I can tell. Anyone else doing this?

Only in my starters. Someday I'll try the whole batch, but with a blow off tube I haven't seen the need.
