1st Starter Questions

Sun Mar 02, 2008 1:29 pm

I'm new to the forum and new to starters. I had some questions about starters. I've been brewing extract for about one year and am now trying my first starter.
I started it yesterday and was wanting to cold crash it before pitching, but I was wondering how long should it be in the fridge in order to get that separation?
Would it be worth it/ okay to cool it and pitch it in the same day?
I was planning on brewing today but I got distracted by the Lakers and Dallas game.
Thanks for your thoughts.

It all depends on the size of your starter. Any time I pitch a starter less than 2 liters, I just pitch the whole thing into the fermenter and skip trying to crash out the yeast. That small a volume won't make a difference in anything but the lightest tasting pilsners. Otherwise, overnight crashing seems to work best.

I agree with what Bug said. Unless you made a HUGE starter or are pitching into a very mild beer (in which case a starter is probably not even necessary) you are probably safe pitching the whole thing. Otherwise, overnight in the fridge and poor off the top, then pitch the rest. With yeasts like WLP002... they will crash out quickly.
