Soap/Evaporation marks on bottles

Tue Jul 04, 2006 4:55 pm

Hi all,
Ok -- So the short of it is that I let about 2 cases of bottles in a soap solution for about 3 weeks. The long of it is that they were only supposed to soak long enough to get the labels off, but then I went on vacation then on a business trip.

Anyway, I got 'em out and rinsed off, now they dry with white marks on (at least) the outside. If I get them wet, they return to "normal" brown color. However, when they dry they go back to the original white marks.

So..... I rinsed about a 6-pack's worth in PBW, then rinsed. Then I put one of those in StarSan, and let dry. The 5 that went through the PBW looked like the ones that hadn't been "treated" with PBW. The one that I put in StarSan looks much better, but still has non-white markings of some kind.

Anyone have any idea of exactly what these white marks are, why StarSan seemed to help, and whether or not these 2 cases of bottles are still ok to use in bottling beer?

Thanks for any help.

Try soaking a few in Bleach or Amonia and see if it helps. Since they are glass you can rinse all of this away.

Both PBW and Starsan are soapy, so maybe that has something to do with it?

Just a thought...

I get rid of marks like that with a vinegar rinse. Doesn't even take a soak normally, just a dip and rinse.

I figured since it is our good ol' friend glass is non-porous, non-scratchable, etc etc that these marks could be removed.

I just whipped up a Vinegar solution (1 cup to about 1.5 quarts of water), and sure enough, it looks like those marks are gone! If I can find some ammonia or bleach I will be sure to try that on these marks and report back on the results of using those three.

You guys rule, thanks so much. I was going to be bummed if I couldn't actually use those reclaimed bottles due to worries of contamination by soap marks.

I will definitely be running them thorugh a full PBW/StarSan cycle + a dishwasher sanitizer cycle before bottling any beer.

Thanks again
