Half Filling cornies

Thu Jun 15, 2006 6:25 pm

Newbie question:

I'm brewing small batches. 10-12 litres and I'm thinking about getting a kegging system. Small kegs being poisonously expensive, is there any reason why I can't just use normal sized cornies and just not fill em all the way up?

I can't think of any issues, except maybe that it probably wouldn't be too efficient on the CO2 useage.

Advice from those wise in the lore of th ekeg would be much appreciated

no reason you cant... be sure to purge the keg of air with CO2 first... oh yeah you will waste a bunch of co2 also

Me neither. If you properly purge them with CO2 to get all the O2 out, there shouldn't be a problem with this.

Thanks guys,

I have built all my stuff around making sure that if/when I upsize to doing 5 gallon or bigger batches, the core of my system wont have to be replaced, just the stuff around the edges. Looks like I can do kegging in the same way.

A bit of CO2 wasted in a bunch of headspace in the cornies, but no harm done. And if I want to do 5 gallon for a party or something, I just fill em up.

Excellent. Thanks for the feedback
