Bottle Filler and Oxygen Question

Thu Sep 07, 2006 11:42 am

When I am siphoning from the priming bucket, I use a racking cane, tubing, and one of the those bottle fillers with the release pin on the end.

I've noticed that when I put in in the bottle, it releases the beer in the tube at such a high velocity that the beer going into each bottle has bubbles on top as if it's splashing into the bottle. You can also hear the gushing sound of the beer entering the bottle for the first half of the fill. I've always heard that you should try to avoid splashing or stiring up the beer too much when bottling or kegging?

Is this going to provide any off flavors in the long run? If so, how can I fill bottles more quietly or more gently? How do you avoid oxygen in bottles?

Thanks for your time. :aaron

I assume you are carbing with priming sugar in the bottle? If that is true, that o2 will get taken care of when the carbonation takes place. Not much worry there.

You can also use those nifty O2 absorbing caps. I don't know if they actually work, but I use them 'cause they didn't cost much more from B3 for 100 of 'em. They should absorb any o2 left in the headspace.

Try keeping the height difference between the bottle and the beer level in the priming bucket smaller. This will reduce the pressure. And yes, if the yeast is still active, it will absorb the O2.
