Bottling time?

Do you guys go by gravity readings to decide when to bottle (those who still bottle)? or when the bubbles quit rising in the neck of the carboy? Got two beers that time wise and S.G wise sshould be ready for the bottle, but I still have bubbles climbing up the necks

I check my gravity. Only way I know to make sure your beer is done. I usually check it and then check it again in 2 or 3 days(thats how long I'm at work). As long as it's the same I bottle.

I do the same as Lufa. I used to just go by the number of days, about 10 to 14. Now I look for a steady reading for at least a few days. The trick is to be just as clean as you are on brew day. I started bleaching and cleaning everything before I take my readings. Better safe than sorry.

When I run a secondary, I will just wait for the "bubbling" subside then tranfer and take a reading. Otherwise I wait 10 and take subsequent readings based on how far I need to still go.

My wife just broke yet another hydrometer so i'll be going by feel for awhile. Seems like where ever i put those things, they have a way of finding the floor.

I went a long time on my very first hydrometer, before breaking it. It was a very sad day as it was about the only piece of my original set of equipment that was still in use. Unfortunately, I wound up breaking 2 more in the year that followed due to my obscene clumsiness.

I have 2 hydrometers and a refractometer at home just because things break. Broke a hydrometer just last month or so.

I have found that you are much more likely to break a hydrometer if you only have one. If you have two, the first will last for years.
