Jamil's strict observance triple

I'm brewing Jamil's triple. I'm going to bottle the beer.The recipe says to carbonate at 3 to 4 volumes. I'm guessing it means to keg? It also says to lager for one month.The question is, should I lager in the secondary before I bottle or lager after I bottle? I'm thinking if I lager too early I'll kill the yeast. Any suggestions that are more clear to help me with this situation would be greatly appreciated.

As far as I know, the generally recommended limit for bottle conditioning is around 3 volumes with the regular longnecks. Thicker bottles like what Duvel and Orval come in will work along with the champagne style bottle too.

You can lager in the bottle no problem IMO, though a little crash cooling in the carboy (I wouldn't do a secondary on this) will help clear up the beer and there should still be enough yeast in suspension to carbonate with.

I brewed this recipe with amazing results last year! There's still some left and it's still delicious!

So just fermentation in the Primary , Bottle , then lager. Sounds easy enough, thanks.

I would suggest giving it a week or so in the bottle at room temp before lagering so the beer carbonates properly. If you lager immediately after bottling the ale yeast will go to sleep before they finish the job, and you end up with flat sweet cold beer. Several examples of this practice are noted in Brew Like A Monk.

Yeah, I would definitely make sure you have carbonation before lagering, but otherwise your plan looks good!

Last time I brewed this one, I racked to a keg for lagering after primary was complete. I gave it 2 mos at 38 deg F, then let it warm to room temps and racked to a bottling bucket with fresh yeast and priming sugar. I think adding fresh yeast might be a good idea when bottling this one just to ensure that carbonation works properly.

Actually Jamil addresses this specifically on one of the Podcasts, maybe Lagering or the Belgian Golden one. Crash cooling it for clarity for a couple days should not cause all of the yeast to drop out, there should still be enough to Prime with. But it might take a little longer to carbonate, I think your results will be a lot better...dont need all that extra yeast in suspension for this beer. I have Jamil's Belgian Golden in the fermenter now, and I plan on "lagering" it in the fridge for 36 hours before bottling, hoping to clear it up compared to last time.
