decent fermentation control on the cheap?

So i decided i'd try some sort of fermentation control. usually i just stick my fermenters in the coolest part of my house and let them do their thing..

well i have central air, and in my furnace room, there's a flex conduit that runs into the adjacent room. since we use this basement room for nothing, i took the conduit from the wall and ran it over to a little cage i had built.. covered it with a blanket and stuck my fermenter inside. this worked awesome! everytime i checked, my ferment temperature was between 65-72. the resulting beer was the best beer i've ever put out!

unfortunately i only got about 6 beers out of it before a stuck cobra head leaked 5 gallons of beer onto my floor while i slept.

next batch. same setup.

i just noticed that my temperature was a ghastly 78 degrees! my wife got chilly and turned on our heater last week.

Or... you could just buy a Ranco digital controller and find a free fridge on Craigslist. On any given weekend, I see about 10 free refers in my area - that's how I got mine.
