Storing Slurry too long?

Tue Jul 21, 2009 5:29 am

How long is too long ( :pop hehehe) to store slurry from a brew I did. I have slurry from a Heavy 70/- I did back in June(edit), it is stored in my cooler at 37deg. I was thinking if using it on a Janet's brown. Just make a new starter, oxygenate and make sure they are still good?

Back in July??? Of last year or this year?

I just used a portion of a Pilsen lager slurry that I had racked the beer off of last April 10th. If it still smells good, just make a starter first.

I've used 3-5 month old slurries with various levels of success. I've generally gotten 2 starters going in that instance, or just had a backup of dry-yeast in case the starter came out tasting like an old tennis ball the dog chewed and then sat on...

Even if they get kicking in a starter, the danger is mutations and bacterial contamination.

I've done it before with success, but I've learned to avoid it since then.
I hope my post helped in some way. If not, please feel free to contact me.

I'm with Jamil. Especially on the mutation thing. Petite mutants or Respiratory Deficient mutants if you like, wouldn't be detectable by smell. They could crap out and leave the beer under attenuated and you wouldn't know until days after you pitched.

Ok, will toss. Not worth the $ to mess up my beer.
