can't believe I just brewed a 'kit', but was very interested in this. So far after 1 week of fermentation, there is a very English characteristic to this beer, which is very pleasing.

I can vouch that the beer in the link below is a cracker and could be along the lines of what you are looking for.

Check out the recipe discussion page aswell, as tweaked versions have been made over the years.
