will a standard (bbq) propane regulater work?

Sat May 11, 2013 1:27 pm

I have a old propane burner (and i mean old and from the looks of it homemade) there is no regulator on it currently, so the only control i currently have is with the valve on the tank itself. Im new to this, and wasnt sure if a lp propane regulator (like on a bbq) with a ball valve downstream would be sufficient to boil at least 7 gallons without taking all day. Thanks

I don't know for sure, but that sounds like a BAD idea.

Best case scenario, the OPD safety valve causes it to not work. Worst case scenario - boom. A ball valve isn't a good way to try and control a pressurized tank.

you need an adjustable regulator or a good life policy to look after those that you leave behind. Just sayin'

You could replace both the regulator and the burner for about 55 bucks plus tax and shipping:

It might be smarter than trying to risk it with the old unregulated homemade setup.

Do it! I like fireworks! JUST KIDDING! It's a very bad idea.

Not to take away money from B3, but since we have the Amazon link on the main page check there as well. They've got some for under $50.

you need a regulator to cut the pressure down from the propane tank. Propane is only liquid because it is under pressure. BAD BAD IDEA to not have a regulator. Also you need to know if your burner is high pressure or low pressure

I've seen a few of homemade jobs, in fact every ski resort I've worked for has some version of a flame thrower that a mechanic has whipped up. Same idea as the open torch burners some moonshiners use. The one's I've seen all use a commercial braided hose & regulator though. I don't know about the 'shiners, but the mechanics have always known what they were doing. The resort owners would never let something fly that would risk their seasonal insurance. I'd never recommend someone to just go out and try building one without knowing for 100% sure they were building something safe. A good old Bayou Classic is just too cheap & effective to bother with those types of risks for a batch of homebrew.
